What am I missing??? To me, he sounds like he is trapped under a duvet with a mouth full of cotton balls.
It's so nice to hear these live recordings from the early 1960s, before she burned out. They prove that she really was wonderful, with so much "face" to the voice.
Aber, Lohengrin stirbt doch nicht. Völlig „entkitscht“ und allen Pathos entkleidet, von mir aus, aber die Oper völlig abzuändern, das mag ich nicht. Da geht es ja zu wie bei Shakespeare. Die armen Soprane sollen einen verständlichen Text singen. Das geht doch überhaupt nicht. Ich fragte mich auch, was Elsa so beharrlich festhielt. Dachte schon, es sei eine Katze. Also ein oder zwei Änderungsvorschläge hätte ich gehabt…

es mag gut gesungen sein - ich verstehe aber nicht, warum ein Ritter im Knitteranzug dargestellt wird. Ich mag diese Inszenierung überhaupt nicht. Für mich gehört ein Ritter in eine Rüstung. Das hätte weder Wagner noch Ludwig II gefallen.
Vielleicht, weil er da incognito war? Ich hätte auch nicht gedacht, dass man das kniend singen könnte. Ein sehr baritonaler Klang, aber auch großartig.
Mich stört in erster Linie, dass Lohengrin stirbt, statt traurig zur Gralsburg zu schiffen. Es ist erlaubt, die Hauptperson zu töten, aber wehe jemand macht ein happy end daraus.

To all the Pretre-critics here: I found the orch. colors, the fine nuances, the balance of instr. forces and, yes the pacing, all admirable. Do it much faster & you belittle Verdi's inspiration!
I saw him do this live in Melbourne Australia a couple of years back - extraordinary

Im not a fan of kaufmann. Ive heard him before and was not impressed. But here he surpises me. His tone is very dark and since the volume is lower and his interpretation more understated as befits the music im impressed. But as soon as he starts projecting more the lovely tone is gone. For me there was only one who sang this revealing its true music. Melchior.
C’est magnifique mais les interprétations de Seiffert, King, Thomas, Hoffman me semblent plus pertinentes et belles musicalement. Kaufmann est trop nasal dans les graves et pianos, cela pince la voix. En revanche c’est superbe dans les forte et aiguës. Côté incarnation, c’est super émouvant. Un très bon Lohengrin malgré tout! 👍

Brenboim cut the second verse of "In fernem Land" with Kaufmann but did not cut with Seiffert. Interesting...
